Routine Brake Service Increases Safety!
When it comes to vehicle safety, the braking system is at the top of the list. With school starting and more children out walking or biking to school, this is the perfect month to schedule a brake service for an inspection. Make sure that you can safely stop on that proverbial dime. However, even with regular brake service, brakes are a normal wear item for any car and eventually you will need some form of brake repair.
Drivers can catch potential problems early by recognizing the signs and symptoms that their brake system may need maintenance or repair. A brake service should consist of a thorough inspection of the lining wear, fluid level, rotor thickness, condition of hoses and lines, warning lights, and a test drive to detect other potential problems. There are several symptoms of failing brakes to watch for while you are driving, such as pulling to the left or right, hearing odd noises when you apply the brakes, an illuminated brake warning light, grabbing, low pedal feel, vibration, hard pedal feel, and squealing.
Some of the factors that affect how quickly the components of the braking system wear are:
- Your driving habits (does your foot ride the brake pedal?),
- Operating conditions (frequent stop-and-go situations, pulling heavy loads, mountainous territory, etc.,
- The type of vehicle, and
- The quality of the braking components, such as the lining, pads or rotors.
Remember: Schedule a brake service at least once a year. A properly operating brake system helps ensure safe vehicle operation and control under a variety of driving conditions.
