Why is Car Alignment Necessary?
Misalignment problems and out-of-balance tires are more damaging than most drivers know. Balancing and alignment issues don’t always show up until some type of damage has occurred. Unfortunately, it is often difficult to determine whether a tire needs to be balanced or if the wheel alignment is needed.
Just what does it mean when your wheels are out of alignment? The tires of your vehicle are not pointing in the same direction as the steering wheel. Have your car alignment checked about every 10,000 miles, at least about every other oil change.
What does it mean when your tires are out of balance? There is an uneven distribution of weight around the tire, causing vibrating and shaking at higher speeds, making driving unpleasant. To balance tires, your wheels are removed and placed on a spinning balancing machine. Weights will be added to certain areas on the rim of the tire so that the weight is evenly distributed around the tire.
Alignment problems can develop over time, but they’re more likely to be caused by a specific incident, no matter how minor. If your tires are out of balance or misaligned, here are a few issues you may experience as you drive down the road:
- Vibrating felt in the steering and seat.
- Uneven or rapid tread wear on the tires.
- Increased fuel consumption.
- Pulling to the left or right.
- The steering wheel is crooked while driving straight or it feels loose.
So why are proper tire balancing and car alignment necessary? Here are five good reasons:
- Your tires will last longer;
- Your vehicle will drive smoother and handle better, which means it will be safer to drive;
- Your wheels will point in the right direction, which means you are driving straight;
- Improved fuel economy, saving you money at the pump, and
- Prevent damage to steering and suspension components.
The price of wheel balancing or a car alignment service is much more cost-effective than paying for a new set of tires or replacing shocks!
