But why is it necessary in the summer?
Why is Coolant important?
Coolant helps to keep your engine running cool as it raises the boiling point of the water, allowing it to carry more heat away from the engine. This is important during the hot temperatures of summer. If you let the coolant level get too low, the engine can heat up pretty quickly. If you allow this for extended periods of time, a radiator repair will be eminent. By keeping the coolant at the recommended level, you can avoid costly radiator repair, and gain peace of mind that your engine will remain cool as you take that last road trip of summer.
When scheduling a radiator service, ask your mechanic to inspect the engine's hoses. You can also look to see if there is any fluid leaking under the car where you park at night. A spill or a leak while the engine is running is a big indicator of a problem more serious than just simply adding more antifreeze. Take your vehicle in for a radiator repair as soon as possible to avoid more extensive and serious damage to your engine.
Tip to remember: So your vehicle will keep its cool for the last hot days of summer, regularly check the antifreeze/coolant level and top off as necessary. Coolant / anti-freeze can be added to the plastic overflow reservoir until the mixture reaches the full mark.
