For those vehicle owners who don't intend to purchase a new vehicle often or who don't lease vehicles, you may avoid expensive car repair by giving your vehicle special attention on a daily and weekly basis. It will pay off in the long run in terms of reliability and trade-in value. It will also help keep your vehicle out of the car repair service center no more than necessary and keep more money in your pocket.
Daily: Take a quick walk around your car to make sure everything looks ok:
- Is there any damage to the bodywork?
- Are the tires are inflated properly?
- Has a significant amount of fluid leaked overnight?
All of these things could cause serious problems if you drove your car off without knowing about them. The time it takes to do a quick inspection will be worth your time and energy.
Weekly: Plan to spend about 10 minutes each week to check the following:
- Tires: What is the air pressure, tread depth and general condition? Don't forget to check the spare!
- Fluids: Are the levels of oil, coolant, brake, windshield washer and power steering fluids correct?
- Lights: Check both the exterior and interior. Are there any burned-out bulbs?
- Windshield Wipers: Are the blades leaving smears and streaking, or are they squeaking?
- Bodywork: Is there any serious damage that may cause your vehicle to operate poorly or that may cause a driving hazard, such as brakes and tires?
- Windows and Mirrors: Are they clean and free of cracks and chips?
- Washing your car: Did you know a clean car will last longer than a dirty one?
How well do you know your vehicle? The time and effort you spend in performing these daily and weekly inspections will save you money with fewer major car repairs. Take care of small problems before they get any bigger. You can trust your vehicle to get you safely from point A to point B!
