How Much Does a Car Tune Up Cost?
This is the million dollar question many mechanics are asked! Because there are so many variables to consider, estimating the cost of a car tune up is difficult. By asking auto shops the three questions below and then comparing their answers, you will be able to arrive at a fairly close estimate for a car tune up:
#1 – Find out which parts are included in the tune up?
Does the shop add in the price of a fuel filter, spark plugs, air filter, PCV filter, and distributor ignition rotor in their quote? If so, their quote will be considerably higher than another shop that only replaces spark plugs in their "car tune up package." Get a complete list of the parts included in the tune up. The tune up could be classified differently, or different replacement schedules could be recommended for specific parts.
#2 – Does the quote include labor?
Does the quote include labor charges in addition to parts and supplies? Particular-brand dealers may use a different guide to estimate labor and parts than a local independent shop.
#3 – Is a tune up really necessary?
Most importantly, make certain that a tune up is really necessary. Just because your vehicle runs poorly doesn't necessarily mean that a tune up will fix the problem. Newer vehicles have computers and sensors that can cause your car to act strangely. Your mechanic should run a diagnostic test to determine if there are any potential problems before determining that a tune up is necessary.
Tip to Remember: Make sure you compare apples-to-apples when getting quotes from different auto repair shops for the cost of a tune up.
