Some vehicle owners find it hard to put out money for transmission service when it seems that their car is running just fine. However, you could be paying out more in the long run with a costly transmission repair that could possibly have been prevented with a timely transmission service.

How do you know when your transmission is bad, you ask? Here are four of the most obvious issues that you will start to notice:

  1. Delayed shifting.
  2. Difficulty and/or noisy shifting.
  3. Slipping in and out of gear.
  4. Overheating and burning smell.

Transmission service is typically relatively simple and inexpensive when compared to a major transmission repair. To see what kind of transmission repair might be needed for the issues above, this service can including the following:

  • Check the sensors – Bad sensors will send inaccurate information to the transmission causing problems shifting, such as gears slipping or jerking while shifting.
  • Clean the transmission unit – This usually means that the transmission unit is removed from the vehicle so that each part can be inspected, cleaned, and the bad parts replaced, which could be the filter and seals. The transmission is then replaced back into your vehicle.
  • Check the auto electrical system – Wiring circuits, fuses, and connections will be checked and faulty parts replaced.
  • Replace transmission unit – In the most extreme and costly type of transmission repair where the old unit has been seriously damaged internally, it may either need to be replaced with a remanufactured unit, or your old one will be rebuilt.

Remember: To help ensure your vehicle gives you many miles of reliable service, find the transmission service schedule listed in your owner’s manual and follow it as closely as possible. A few dollars spent now will save you many dollars down the road.
