More than a bar between two wheels like a little red wagon, car axles are far more complex. Today, most are split axles, which means the wheel on each side is attached to a separate shaft. This allows independent suspension of the left and right wheels, providing a much smoother ride and better traction. The life of your tires is also enhanced as it permits the left and right wheels to rotate at different speeds as the automobile turns. Some cars have a transaxle (which is a combination of the transmission and the axle). In rear-wheel vehicles, the engine is connected to a driveshaft which turns the drive axle in the back of the car.

The suspension system, made up of shock absorbers and struts, not only keeps your car riding smoothly, it keeps the wheels in proper contact with the road. Worn out car shocks and car struts can increase braking distance, resulting in serious problems, or even an accident.
