6 Tips On How To Make Your Car Battery Last Longer!
Car batteries have always been an integral component in the operation of automobiles. But today’s batteries are getting more and more of a workout from more sophisticated vehicle electronics in newer model cars, not to mention the myriad of electronics that drivers and passengers use.
When a battery fails it’s a serious problem that needs immediate attention and most of the time, it doesn’t happen at a convenient time or place. There are tips that every vehicle owner can utilize to help extend the life of their vehicle’s battery. These are not complicated; it’s something every driver can do. Here are the six most common tips on how to make your car battery last longer:
- Limit Short Rides – Combine trips if you can’t limit the distance of each trip.
- Keep Your Battery Tightly Fastened – A loose battery can easily jiggle loose connections and cause intermittent electrical connections, resulting in a negative effect on your battery.
- Turn Off All the Lights – When you arrive at your destination, be sure to turn off all lights. Unplug any electrical device that is using power, including your cell phone. The longer your lights and power accessories are on the more it draws from your vehicle battery.
- Control the Corrosion – Keep the battery terminal clean of corrosion build up. Corrosion inhibits the electrical current that flows from the battery to the vehicle engine and other electrical accessories. This causes unnecessary drain on your battery as well.
- Test Your Battery Often – Have your battery tested on a regular basis and top-off the cells with water if necessary.
- Don't Use Electronics When Idle – Limit electronic use while the car is idling for long periods of time as it causes a heavy pull of electrical current from the battery. The alternator may not be able to keep up with the electrical current needs of the battery.
